Hop on board the icebreaking RV Kronprins Haakon and hear about students' experiences conducting research in the Central Arctic Ocean.
The Arctic is warming at least 3x the global average, and the Arctic Ocean is in fast transit towards ice-free conditions. The regions north of Svalbard are experiencing the largest changes. This Arctic Ocean Research Cruise was an opportunity to bring selected students to this fast-changing region and provide mentorship and promote capacity and network building among experienced scientists and experts. The Arctic Ocean Cruise was organized by the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), in conjunction with the onset of the Norwegian Chairship of the Arctic Council.
Over 10 Bachelor, Master and PhD students from Arctic nations were selected by NPI to participate in the cruise. On on board, the students were guided by scientists and experts to gain hands-on experience in the fields of physical and biological oceanography, pelagic ecosystem, net and trawl catches, taxonomy and contaminants. Students participated in data acquisition and could use the collected material and data in their own research. Students also took part in an interactive series of talks and discussions about Arctic changes, issues, strategies and policies.
The cruise will started and ended in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, and sailed into the Nansen Basin from 10-29 August 2023. Experts from NPI and two Arctic Council Working Groups – the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) and the Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME) – were on board to mentor, network and engage with students. …...more
